Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NOVAC in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy, Kickstarter and local film organizations join forces to cultivate and fund short films about New Orleans in advance of the Tricentennial - Call for proposals is open!

As the City of New Orleans prepares for its 300th Anniversary celebration, four film and artist support organizations team up to celebrate and share our rich history and culture by cultivating and funding five short films that focus on New Orleans. NOVAC, The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy/Film New Orleans, Kickstarter, and The New Orleans Film Society call for proposals for short films by New Orleans Filmmakers. Applications for this opportunity are open August 8 through September 1, 2017.

"New Orleans has been home to some of Kickstarter's most innovative and creative projects," says Elise McCave, Director of Narrative Film at Kickstarter. "So, we're delighted to be able to support a group of local filmmakers telling stories from and about the city and its people, and to collaborate with three brilliant local film organisations to do that."

"Film New Orleans is proud to bring together these partners to create an opportunity for our local filmmaking community," says Katie Williams, Director of Film New Orleans. "The support of these 3 organizations speaks to the strength and creativity of our City and filmmakers."

Proposed films can be in narrative or documentary genres, must be 15 minutes or less and speak to the themes, history and people of New Orleans, as we look to the upcoming celebration of the Tricentennial in 2018. A total of five selected films will receive mentorship from Kickstarter to aid in the creation of dynamic crowdfunding campaigns to raise $5,000 in funding for their films. Provided they raise their $5,000, they will then be awarded an additional $5,000 in project support.

Selected filmmakers will receive:

  • A $5,000 matching grant
  • Fundraising support from Kickstarter (one-on-one online workshop, with messaging and strategy assistance)
  • An in-person intensive with Kickstarter during the New Orleans Film Festival 2017
  • All Access passes to the 2017 New Orleans Film Festival
  • Production support from Film New Orleans (location file pull assistance, city service and permit consultation)
  • 20 hours of ongoing support from NOVAC for the cohort during production
  • Premiere event showcase in the Spring of 2018 in New Orleans
